Duplicate Posts with AI

Ask your AI client to create a new post, page, or supported custom post type item from an existing one. The copy is a separate item, not a complete clone of every part of the original.

Ask for a draft copy

Ask your AI client to duplicate the item and provide its post_id, the ID of the original item. You can also specify a title and status. If you omit the title, the copy uses the original title. If you omit the status, the copy is a draft.

The supported statuses are draft, pending, private, and publish. Force draft on create still applies, so the copy remains a draft if that setting is enabled, even when you request another status. Publishing also requires the connected user to have permission to publish.

For example, ask: “Duplicate this page as a draft titled Spring Campaign, keeping its builder layout.”

The connected user must be allowed to edit the original item and create the copy. To duplicate a custom post type item, the type must be available through a supported WordPress REST API route, the interface Easy MCP AI uses to work with WordPress content. The connection must also allow the tool that creates custom post type items.

What is copied?

The copy includes the original content and excerpt, categories, tags, and other taxonomy terms available through the REST API, featured image, template, post format, parent item, menu order, comment and ping settings, password, and eligible post metadata (extra fields stored by WordPress or plugins). This can include builder layouts.

The copy does not retain the original date, slug, author, sticky status, comments, child pages, or editing history. WordPress creates a new slug, and the connected user becomes the author.

You cannot use this tool to duplicate media, revisions, menu items, Site Editor entities, or WooCommerce products.

Check the result

Review the response for the new item's id and status, along with any skipped_*, content_filtered, or status_error fields. These fields indicate details that were skipped, filtered, or could not be applied.

If an error occurs after the new item is created, the response can identify a draft that already exists. Find and review that draft, then finish or remove it as needed. Do not retry blindly, or you may create another copy.
